The No. 9 Wartburg College Knights men’s track and field team finished first out of the nine competing programs at the 2019 American Rivers Conference Championships with 177 points. The championship is the first for the men’s program since 2015 and 10thoverall as a program.

The Knights finished ahead of 12th-ranked Dubuque, 20th-ranked Central and 21st-ranked Loras en route to claiming nine events. Senior Mark Schulz (Cedar Rapids) won the 800m run with a time 1:55.53, while sophomore Matt Heinzman (Royal Oak, Mich.) won the mile at 4:16.70, junior Caleb Appleton (Zimmerman, Minn.) won the 3,000-meter run at 8:34.2 and sophomore Sam Pinkowski (La Crosse, Wis.) won the 5,000-meter run at 14:40.87. The 4×200-meter relay team won its event by running 1:29.80, while the 4×800-meter team won their event by finishing at 7:53.52. The distance medley relay squad captured the title by finishing with a time of 10:17.33. Senior Famiek Cook (Cedar Rapids) won the long jump with a leap of 7.36-meters and sophomore Riley Barrett (Parkersburg) won the heptathlon with 4,261 points.
Cook’s long jump set a new facility record, beating the previous record by .02 meters. In the men’s heptathlon 1,000-meter run, sophomore Curren Matthias (Denver) set a new American Rivers Conference Championship mark by running a 2:39.01.
