Throwers Lead the Way For Vikings

Men

The Grand View men’s track and field team traveled to St. Ambrose on Friday afternoon to compete in the Fighting Bee Opener.  The Vikings captured 1st place in the team standings behind 7 individual winners. Four Vikings hit national qualifying marks and one school record was set.

Grand View’s James Plummer (SR/Columbia, South Carolina) won the weight throw and the shot put events, claiming NAIA “A standard” national qualifying marks in both events.  Austin Hill (JR/Pella, Iowa) finished 5th overall in the weight throw while qualifying with a “B standard” mark for the national meet. Isaiah Wittrock, Alonzo Spencer-Rodriguez, and Ahren Davis swept the 800-meter run taking first, second and third, respectively.

Mile Race 1st Place:  Ben Huftalin (SO/Osage, Iowa)

800M Race 1st Place:  Isaiah Wittrock (FR/Richland, Iowa)

4X400M Race 1st Place:  Gannon Svestka (SO/Johnston, Iowa), Alonzo Rodriguez-Spencer, Jacob Thompson, Isaiah Wittrock

 

Grand View School Record Set…

There was one school record broken this weekend in the 1,000m race by Brandon Young who finished second.

Men’s NAIA National Qualifying Marks…

In the second meet of the season, three Vikings had four NAIA qualifying marks.

Weight Throw:  James Plummer (65′ 7″) “A Standard”

Austin Hill (54′ 1.25″) “B Standard”

Shot Put:  James Plummer (53′ 11.75″) “A Standard”

1,000M Race:  Brandon Young (2:32.27) “B Standard”

Grand View finished 1st out of 5 teams on Friday.  The team results are below:

 

Women

The Grand View women’s track and field team traveled to St. Ambrose on Friday afternoon to compete in the Fighting Bee Opener.  The Vikings won five events, had the top two finishers in the women’s 60M hurdles and set a new school record.

Grand View’s Michelle Carrillo (JR/Storm Lake, Iowa) won the weight throw by over 6 feet with a toss of 57′ 3.5″ which qualifies her with an NAIA A standard mark.  Chantel Blair (JR/Boone, Iowa) won the long jump for the Vikings, recording a 17′ 11.75″ jump, which qualified her with an NAIA B standard.  Blair now holds the Grand View school record in the long jump.
