The Northern Iowa track and field team began the 2017-18 season with an impressive outing, as the Panthers placed first in six events to cap action on Friday at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center.

Fresh faces were abundant for the UNI track and field squad on Friday, with nine Panthers making their collegiate debuts. Dianna Slight had a stellar showing in Ames, as the Boone, Iowa native won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.13. Fellow freshman Darius King also won on Friday, after throwing 56-11.25 in the shot put.
Ham led the Panthers on the men’s side, after taking a win in the 200-meter dash (21.96) and placing second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.18). All-in-all, the UNI men had six runner-up finishers as Dylan Eigenberger (Mile; 4:21.33), Cade Kirkpatrick (Long jump; 22-10.00), Hunter Lavallee (800-meter run;1:51.94) and Isaac Holtz (Weight throw; 58-01.00 & shot put; 56-01.25) all finished with second-place showings. The 4×400-meter relay team of Jojo Frost, Bryce Newcomb, Connor Bloughand Jordan Pingel also earned a second-place finish with a time of 3:17.91.
On the women’s side, four Panthers took events with Bell (200-meter dash; 25.36), Blue (60-meter dash; 7.71), Rath (High jump; 5-05.00) and Slight (800-meter run; 2:17.13) all opening the season with victories. Six Panthers on the women’s side were runner-ups as Bell (60-meter dash; 7.80), Katie Cross (Long jump; 17-04.00), Lauren Frederick (60-meter hurdles; 9.19), Jolissa Kriegel (400-meter dash; 58.87), Sarah Pate (Weight throw; 61-00.25) and Marissa Ward (High jump; 5-03.00) each placed second.
The Panthers will not have a scheduled competition until Jan. 13, 2018, when UNI hosts the Panther Open.
