Kohut-Jackson, a redshirt freshman, paced the field of 63 runners in 22:35.6 with unattached Gopher rookie Anastasia Korzenowski finishing as runner-up in 22:43.4. Drake senior Bailee Cofer was third in 22:48.1 while redshirt freshman Zetta Mason (22:51.0) and unattached Gopher rookie Jaycie Thomsen (23:02.6) rounded out the top five.
“We didn’t run our top seven, which presented a good opportunity for some of our other kids to step up and be in a scoring spot, and they did a great job,” head coach Sarah Hopkins said. “We obviously had the individual champ in Abby KJ, and I thought that was the best race of her collegiate career to this point. It’s obviously hard to lead … it was nice to see her get out there and assert herself.
“We had a good group right around her, too. Anastasia Korzenowski, as a redshirt, had an awesome debut 6K and ran really well. Zetta Mason and Lindsey Greenlund ran really well, and Jaycie Thoomsen, also red-shirting, ran really well. We put a bunch of people in the top 10 and on a day like this, that’s a really good day.”
The Gophers cruised to the team title with 25 points ahead of runner-up North Dakota State with 54 points. South Dakota State (62), Drake (95), and Hamline (151) rounded out the five-team meet.
Overall, the Gophers placed seven individuals among the top-10 finishers, including three athletes racing unattached. In the team scoring, Minnesota placed five in the top nine in Kohut-Jackson, Mason, Greenlund, Molly Eastman, and Carissa Dock.
“I think we have a lot of excitement right now, and when we get the whole group back together at Griak, it’s going to be really fun to see how these guys mix back in with our top seven,” Hopkins said. “We’re in a really good place right now and now we have a couple weeks to go back to work and then be ready to come back out here with a lot more company and hopefully have a great day at Griak.”
Minnesota has a week off from competition next week in preparation for the 32nd annual Roy GriakInvitational at Les Bolstad Course on Saturday, Sept. 23.
