Knights Bagge Wins Crown, Men and Women 2nd at Conference

Wartburg Women

Iowa-Wartburg’s women’s cross country team finished in second place at the 2017 IIAC Championships with 47 points.

The Orange and Black were narrowly defeated by No. 28 Nebraska Wesleyan, who tallied 35 points. This marked the second-straight year the Knights finished in second.

Senior Ashlyn Bagge (Independence) placed first with a time of 22:05.1. The win marked Wartburg’s first IIAC individual champion since Alana Enabnit in 2012 and Bagge’s fourth title this season. Bagge finished 31 seconds ahead of Luther’s Kenzie Carney, who finished in second. She was the 10th individual champion in program history.

Freshman Cassidy Christopher (Cedar Falls) finished in seventh place with a time of 22:58.9, with classmate Carina Collet (Verona, Ill.) running a time of 22:59.8 for eighth place. Rounding out the top 15 for All-Conference honors was senior Beth Mallon (Davenport) in 15th place with a time of 23:32.3.

Junior Shae McEnany (Independence) finished in 16th with a time of 23:34.4. Crossing the finish line in a time of 23:55.1 for 21st place was Nicole Breitbach (North Buena Vista).

Wartburg will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 11 at the NCAA Regional Meet in Northfield, Minn.

Wartburg Men

Wartburg’s 16th-ranked men’s cross country finished in second place at the 2017 IIAC Championships with 41 points. The Knights were edged by No. 6 Loras, who tallied 24 points.

Wartburg held off No. 34 Nebraska Wesleyan, who finished in third with 88 points. This marked the best finish for the Knights since 2007, when they also took second.

The top finisher for Wartburg was freshman Sam Pinkowski (La Crosse, Wis.) with a time of 25:15.0. Senior Eli Kaczinski (Charlotte) ran a time of 25:22.5, which put him at fifth place. Sophomore Caleb Appleton (Bemidji, Minn.) also finished in the top 10 at eighth place with a time of 25:40.7.

Junior Casey Roberts (Ankeny) ran a time of 25:47.0, putting him in 11th place. Rounding out the top 15 to earn All-Conference honors was freshman Ali Ali (Iowa City), finishing in 14th place with a time of 26:01.4.

The Knights will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 11 at the NCAA Regional meet in Northfield, Minn.
