Jackrabbits’ Covey Celebrates Birthday with New School Record

From the SDSU Indoor Classic at the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex to the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, the South Dakota State Track and Field teams kept busy Saturday. South Dakota State would end the day having captured seven individual titles, (3 women, 4 men), account for 15 changes to the program’s top 10 list (6 women, 9 men), three new school records and a slew of personal bests across both locations.

In the end, the Jackrabbits would walk away from the SDSU Indoor Classic with the men’s and women’s team titles.

In her first race wearing a Jackrabbits uniform, newcomer Rich-Ann Archer from Kingston, Jamaica landed herself on the all-time list in the women’s 60m dash. Archer ran a 7.81 in the first qualifying heat of the event, placing her ninth all-time. Later on in prelims, Archer improved her 7.81 mark to a 7.80, tying her for the eighth best mark in Jackrabbit history.

Anna Fasen took third and picked up a new PR in the women’s mile with her 5:00.63 performance.

Three Jacks picked up points in the women’s shot put. Alexis Schmidt came in first with her throw of 46-06.25, which also earned her a PR. After Schmidt, Micayla Ter Wee tied for second with her throw of 46-02.75 and Madi Moorhouse came in fourth place with her mark of 45-05.25.

Micayla Ter Wee went on to second in the women’s weight throw with a mark of 57-05.00, and Caitlin Thilges landed third place with a throw of 55-03.00.

Chloe Holtz and Addison Eisenbeisz tied for second in the women’s high jump with leaps of 5-03.75.

Lauren Van Dyke grabbed the new No. 9 spot on the program’s all-time list in the women’s 400. Van Dyke came in second place with a 57.32.

The Jackrabbits went 1-2-3 in the women’s long jump. Annie Wendt took first with her leap of 18-09.50, Emma Stewart came in second with an 18-06 and Emily Alteburg finished third with her mark of 18-03.75.

Unattached Jackrabbit Jaymie O’Connor took second in the women’s 60m hurdles finals with a time of 8.57.

SDSU took first and second in the women’s triple jump. Chloe Holtz jumped for a distance of 37-03.75 and took second while Sophie Bisgard added her name to the program’s top 10 list with her jump of 37-10.25, placing her ninth.

The South Dakota State ‘A’ relay of Lauren Van Dyke, Hannah Whitbread, Rich-Ann Archer and Elizabeth Kolb took third in the women’s 4×400 with a 3:55.98,

Ellie Friesen PR’d in the women’s mile, tying her with Jodi Smith’s mark of 4:54.06 set in 2000 for fourth place on day two of the Iowa State Classic.

Oksana Covey picked up the first school record of the day for the Jackrabbits, placing ninth with a mark of 2:08.33 in the women’s 800.

Lukas Nelson continued to climb the all-time list. His 4-06.63 second place finish in the men’s mile put him at fifth on the list. His previous best was a 4:09.06 that had him at 10th.

Three new personal best marks accompanied three new all-time marks in the men’s weight throw. Noah Huber took first with a throw of 63-11.00, good enough for the third best all-time mark. Sam Coil came in second with his throw of 63-09.25, which placed him fourth on the all-time list and Tyson Jenkins threw for a mark of 57-07.00, placing him fourth in the event and ninth on the program’s all-time list.

Jacob Lackas took third in the men’s 60m hurdles finals with a time of 8,26. Coby Hilton took second in the men’s 60m dash with a 6.89.

Nick Wessels picked up another school record for SDSU. Wessels finished first in the men’s 60m hurdles with his mark of 8.02.Caleb Bray took second in the men’s 400 with a 48.06.

Trent Francom set a new school record in the men’s pole vault, beating his previous best 17-00.75 with a vault of 17-05.00 to take first place.

Tre Manning long jumped for a distance of 3:55.98. Taking second place and the 10th spot on SDSU’s all-time list for the men’s long jump

Noah Huber, Sam Coil, Tyson Jenkins and Trevor Begeman went 1-5 in the men’s shot put. Noah Huber picked up the second best all-time mark with a toss of 57-05.25 and Trevor Begeman moved into ninth on the list with his throw of 53-10.00 that earned him fifth place. Dominick Etherington grabbed second with a throw of 56-05.25, Sam Coil took third with a mark of 55-09.75 and Tyson Jenkins came in fourth with a 54-00.00. These five account for four of the top five shot put marks in program history, and five in the top 10.
