The Viking’s women’s track and field team competed this weekend in the Jim Dutcher Memorial Invitational hosted by Doane College.
In the field, senior Val Veiock (West Des Moines, Iowa) finished second in the shot put with a throw of 14.76m setting a Grand View school record and hitting the NAIA “A” standard. Veiock currently sits third in the nation in the shot put.
She also placed second in the discus making the NAIA “A” standard with a throw of 44.50m as well as fourth in the hammer throw hitting the NAIA “B” standard with a heave of 50.20m.
Senior Jena Krebs (Washington, Iowa) had two third place finishes in the hammer (50.33m) and the javelin (38.79m). Krebs hammer throw hit the NAIA “A” standard.
On the track, sophomore Katie Roberts (Ankeny, Iowa) finished fourth in the 800m which was a personal best and Midwest Collegiate Conference (MCC) leading time. Roberts also ran on Grand View’s fourth place 4x800m relay which posted a season best and hit the NAIA “B” standard with a time of 9:29.83 (King-Kak-Roberts-Nielsen).
The Vikings host the Grand View Classic this Friday, April 24 at 12 p.m. at Williams Stadium.
The Vikings women’s and men’s track and field teams each have an athlete that has been named this week’s MCC field athlete of the week.
Senior Val Veiock (West Des Moines, Iowa) won her sixth award by placing high in three events at the Jim Dutcher Memorial Invitational. She was second in both the hammer throw (164-8) and discus (146-0). The senior was also fourth in the shot put with a season-best mark of 48-5.25. She has ‘A’ standards in all three events.
Sophomore Malik Denny (Des Moines, Iowa) won his first award by qualifying for nationals and breaking a school record at the Jim Dutcher Memorial Invitational. The sophomore accomplished both with a winning high jump mark of 6-9. He was also sixth in the long jump at 20-9.25.
