Out in the “sleeper zone” and in among the crowds, Kolby Greiner ran virtually alone.
A junior at Iowa City West, Greiner trucked away from the field and captured individual honors in the boys’ race of the Cedar Rapids Prairie Invitational cross country meet Saturday morning on the College Community Schools campus.
“I wish I would have had a little more competition,” said Greiner, whose finishing time of 16:06 was 41 seconds ahead of the field. “I don’t like running on my own.
“It’s kind of tough out in the sleeper zone at the far end of the course. There’s nobody out there.”
Greiner only had himself to blame for his solitude. He got away from the pack relatively early and kept pushing the margin.
“This summer I have been doing a lot of 10K training,” he said. “So when you come down to racing 5K, it’s easy money.”
An unseasonably cool morning — 63 degrees at race time with cloudy skies and sprinkles — made for ideal racing conditions.
The Hostetler sisters were 1-2 at state last year in the Class 2A race. They paced Mid-Prairie to a fourth-place girls’ finish Saturday in a field that consisted mostly of 4A and 3A competition.
Cedar Falls won it with 60 points. Linn-Mar was second with 90, followed by Waukee and Mid-Prairie (93 each).
Linn-Mar freshmen Micah Poellet (19:18) and Lilly Geelan (19:48) were third and fourth. Paige Holub of Monticello was fifth.
